FO: Masonry Mitts

Thanks to Ravelry, I became aware that my yarn stash was out of control. Ever since I started knitting, I’ve kept track of all my projects, yarn, and other supplies on there so every bit of yarn that I’ve collected goes straight into my stash page. And it’s… it’s pretty bad right now. But Ravelry also has a cool feature where you can look up projects based on yarn weight and fiber so I’ve been using that to find as many projects as possible for smashing my stash. This is one such project.

I knew that I wanted to try knitting some gloves, but I wanted to start with some fingerless projects first before tackling those tiny fingers. That’s when this pattern jumped out at me. Masonry Mitts by Vera Brosgol. I loved the look of the stockinette with the alternating garter stitch pattern so I started working on them immediately!
Unfortunately I didn’t have any nice wool to use on them, but I happened to have some Red Heart in one of my favorite color combinations~
(The colorway is “Earth and Sky”, by the way.)

I also took this opportunity to try learning how to knit with DPNs! It ended up being much easier than I first thought. I was kind of intimidated by the amount of needles and so worried that I was going to slip one out by mistake!

I was also so worried about laddering! What would I do if my precious labor-of-love mitts had four awful ladders running up them!? Luckily, I didn’t have that problem! Becca over at The Knitted had a great video on how to keep your knitted tubes from developing the dreaded ladder. The technique she showed was so helpful! I’ll leave a link to her post here, in case anyone else would like to see it.

I guess I’m a really slow knitter because it took me around 3 weeks to finish these. They came out so nice though! I can’t wait for the weather to get cool again so that I can wear them! The only problem is that they are a little big for me. The pattern page said that they were a size medium, which I thought was fine. Maybe my hands are tinier than I thought?

  1. they turned out great 🙂 Personally, I prefer knitting two at a time, using magic loop, as it is less stressful on my hands and wrists. That, and I dislike having to deal with the dreaded “second sock syndrome” (which applies to gloves, too).

  2. I love ravelry too! A lot of the designs there are so normal that you can actually wear it daily — without attracting too much attention. Yay for DPNs. I am from DPNs team. I found DPNs much easier than magic loop with circular needles — although I need to practice it more.
And yay for the FO. Your mitts looks great, love the colour combination. ❤ ❤

  3. Thanks! 😀
I know what you mean! I’ve been meaning to try knitting two at a time for a while. I managed to make a pair of training socks that way, but I haven’t attempted any real projects using that method just yet.

I know, right? I like wearing eccentric knits, but sometimes I think people go overboard with them. It's nice to be able to find some normal patterns. 🙂
I normally do the magic loop method just because I had my circular needles first, but I really like working with DPNs as well! Both methods have things that I really like about them. 🙂

And yeeeees, it’s full of amazing patterns, and the pattern search is so handy. 🙂

  6. I think I need to do more on my ravelry page. At the moment all I do is search and save for patterns on it. I didn’t realise there was a yarn stash section (I’ve been a bit old school and have written it down in a book, and then cross the yarn off as and when I use it). Must investigate further!
The gloves are lovely – well done!

  7. Great mitts! Didn’t know the pattern, so thank you for introducing me to the mitts I’m knitting this fall! Totally queueing it 😉
I just love wearing fingerless mitts. Keep my hands warm but in the meantime I can still feel and touch and scratch 😛

  8. Thank you!
I use Ravelry to keep track of all of my knitting and crochet. It really is so handy because I hate keeping track of things like that in notebooks. My house would be just covered in notebooks if I did that, ha ha!

  9. Yay, looking forward to seeing how yours come out! 🙂
I love wearing fingerless mitts too! My phone has a touchscreen so it can be really annoying to try to take my glove off in time to answer a call. I’ve dropped my phone so many times because of that, ha ha! ^^’

  10. Ah, I am the opposite. I do DPN first before get acquainted with magic loop, that’s probably why I have a slightly skewed opinion about DPNs 😀

  11. Congratulations on taking the plunge and learning to use dpns! Your mitts are beautiful and I’m sure before long you’ll be knitting fingers on a pair of gloves. The fingerless mitts will serve you well until then!
